The world of aesthetic medicine is ever-changing. New technologies are constantly popping up and transforming the skincare game!

What was best practice five years ago — or sometimes five months ago — may be entirely different today. Here at Clarity, we pride ourselves on staying on top of the latest trends to help you look your absolute best.

In this post, we’ll look at the top five aesthetic trends in 2023.

1.   Multi-Dimensional Fillers

So what are multi-dimensional dermal fillers, anyway? Essentially, it’s a filler designed for a specific area of the face, versus just one-size-fits-all. Most dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance that replaces lost collagen, and are reversible, (which means if for any reason you aren’t 100% pleased they can be dissolved).

When Kati first started injecting dermal fillers nearly 20 years ago , JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® were the go-to options for nearly every area on the face. Some multi-dimensional fillers were being developed overseas, but they weren’t available here in the U.S. Today, due to advances and clearance by the FDA, many different fillers have been approved to treat specific areas on the face.

For example:

Restylane®’s family of fillers includes:

  • Restylane® Lyft, designed for cheeks and smile lines (aka nasolabial folds). It provides a lifted, smoothed appearance that can work wonders for a youthful look.
  • Restylane® Contour, designed for midface treatments. It provides volume in the cheek and midface area and offers a natural look.
  • Restylane® Refyne and Defyne, designed with XpresHAn Technology™ to address deep wrinkles and folds, particularly nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
  • Restylane® Kysse, designed to provide natural-looking lip enhancement and smooth perioral lines (above the upper lip).

RHA®collection from Revance includes:

  • RHA® Redensity, this product is new as of August 2022, and is the first and only FDA-approved filler for injection in both superficial dermis and dermis. It’s excellent for fine-tuning areas around the perioral area (such as vertical lip lines, or smoker’s lines), which is an extremely dynamic region.
  • RHA® 2, which provides an elegant softening of moderate to severe facial lines.
  • RHA® 3, which offers refined smoothing for moderate to severe wrinkles and folds including marionette lines and nasolabial folds.
  • RHA® 4, which provides natural restoration for areas in deeper need of volume, such as nasolabial folds.

Revanesse®’s offerings include:

  • Revanesse® Versa™, which works to refresh facial volume all over and smooth wrinkles.
  • Revanesse® Lips™, which enhances lip volume to create a plumper look.

JUVÉDERM® family of fillers includes:

  • JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, a classic product that restores lost volume.
  • JUVÉDERM® Volbella, designed to treat vertical lip lines.
  • JUVÉDERM® Voluma XC, designed to restore volume to the cheeks and midface.
  • JUVÉDERM® Vollure XC, designed to correct severe facial wrinkles and folds.

RADIESSE® and Sculptra®:

These are collagen-boosting, bio-stimulator fillers, or what are often called “foundational” fillers. Both options are excellent for gradually restoring overall volume to the face. Sculptra® is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid filler, while RADIESSE® uses Calcium hydroxylapatite, or CaHA. These two are not reversible.

So what makes all of these fillers different from one another? Why are some good for certain areas of the face? Fillers are differentiated by the size of the molecule of hyaluronic acid (or whatever substance is being used), the viscosity (thickness) and the depth of injection. Each one is unique.

Our skilled injectors Kati, PA-C, and Heather, RN, can analyze your face and determine which dermal filler to use for your unique needs, beauty goals, and budget.

2.   Neurotoxins

You’ve definitely heard of BOTOX®, but did you know that there are an array of other neurotoxins (aka wrinkle modulators) that can smooth wrinkles and create a more vibrant and youthful appearance?

These days, you’ve got choices. The selections include the classic BOTOX®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau® and the newest of the bunch: DAXXIFY®, which lasts longer than any of the alternatives. (Clarity was one of the first medical aesthetics practice in Connecticut to offer DAXXIFY® to our patients.

Neurotoxin treatments take about 15 minutes and there’s no downtime, which makes it perfect for busy patients.

As far as treatment areas, neurotoxins are excellent for:

  • Glabella also known as the “11s”
  • Forehead
  • In the cupid’s bow (the area above the lip/beneath the nose – for a subtle lip lift)
  • Underarms for hyperhidrosis aka excessive sweating
  • Treat a gummy smile
  • TMJ (a muscle spasm in your jaw that can cause teeth grinding)
  • Orange peel chin
  • Exaggerated neck bands

3.   Facial Treatment Plans

Many patients who are new to Clarity want to skip their initial consultation. While we understand wanting to get directly to the (amazing) results, skipping your consultation is a major mistake!

The consultation is an opportunity for our clinical team to become familiar with you, your gorgeous face, your beauty goals, and your budget. It’s the beginning of an important long-term relationship, and the perfect opportunity to map out a treatment plan. The treatment plan is a step-by-step “road map,” or a personalized plan to get you to your goals.

This plan could include a skincare regimen, neurotoxins, dermal fillers, energy-based treatments, etc. — at Clarity, we offer a vast range of services that can help you look and feel your best.

4.   Combination Therapy Treatments

Combination therapy treatments are all-encompassing options that target ALL the signs of aging, rather than addressing a singular need.

These combination treatments can address the following:

  • Lost volume
  • Sunspots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Broken capillaries
  • Poor texture
  • Loose skin
  • Enlarged pores

Examples of combination therapy treatments include dermal fillers, which can address a variety of issues, starting with lost volume and replacing collagen.

Then there are laser treatments, which can treat everything from early wrinkles and minor age spots all the way to deeper lines and spider veins. They also work great for sun spots and hyperpigmentation, while positively impacting skin texture.

As far as lasers, there are two options: non-ablative laser rejuvenation (meaning the treatment does not pierce the skin) and ablative laser rejuvenation (fractionated CO2 laser that poke tiny microscopic “holes” into the skin causing controlled damage, then your body goes to work to repair itself better than before).

For non-ablative treatments, Clarity offers Laser Rejuvenation — Global — which targets all signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. For skin that needs an additional boost, we can add a microneedling treatment (known as Laser Deep).

We also offer Laser Genesis, another non-invasive, mild treatment that offers a light collagen boost. This treatment is excellent just prior to an event, or to maintain a healthy glow after you’ve had more intense treatments.

For ablative treatments, a fractionated CO2 laser targets water, a major component of our skin. The vaporized tissue leads to collagen synthesis and reduction/removal of pigmentation. At Clarity, we use eCO2 by Lutronic, one of the leading fractionated laser platforms available.

Then there are Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments (also known as photofacials), which can reduce sun spots, redness, and many other signs of aging or direct sun damage.

5.   Mesotherapy

This special skin rejuvenation treatment involves injecting a powerful, custom-blended anti-aging solution directly into the skin (specifically, the subcutaneous fat). The customizable combo can include vitamins and minerals, extracts from plants, enzymes, and hormones.

This non-surgical technique is already being widely used in France (where it originated in the 1950s), Japan, and Korea.

Mesotherapy is extremely flexible and can address a wide range of issues; the injection solution can be mixed specifically to treat pore size, pigment, rosacea, fine lines, wrinkles, excess fat, and even hair loss.

This can be a stand-alone treatment, used as part of a treatment plan, or as a special event skin pick-me-up (when performed a minimum of one week prior to your special event).
