As most of you know, anatomy is kind of my passion. I obsess about balance, symmetry and in this part of my life I follow the rules. One rule in particular, the “golden rule”, or rather the Golden Ratio. This is a mathematical ratio that helps determine beauty by the proportion of facial features. There is a different Golden Ratio for both male and female faces.
Note the variances between the male and female ratios. The male face has a harder angled brow versus a slight upward curve in the female ratio. The female cheekbones are higher and wider, whereas the male ratio is more straight up and down. The last major difference is the jawline. The female face angles upward in a ‘V’ formation while the male jawline is more square.
Now let’s talk about Catilyn! Her recent photos in Vanity Fair certainly have people talking. She has been chemically transitioning into her current self for years. Prescription hormones enhance female traits such as breasts, redistribution of hair, softening skin and every woman’s favorite, redistribution of fat to the hips and abdomen.
Caitlyn’s facial transformation is quite amazing. The evolution of her facial features have abandoned the traditional male ratios and have taken on a more feminine shape. In my opinion, this has involved a combination of surgical and non-surgical procedures. We can look at the photos to assess the changes, typical facial feminization includes shaving the “Adam’s apple,” and the frontal bone to soften the forehead. Caitlyn’s face seems to have included cheek implants, thinning of the bridge of the nose, chin shaping, lip augmentation and jaw narrowing either by surgical means or chemical reduction of the jaw muscles by using Botox. She also has had a facelift and eye reshaping. Her eyes previously had a half-moon shape and now have taken on a more almond appearance. Ms. Jenner’s facial reconstruction is a beautiful example of the Golden Ratio.
I have had the pleasure of working with a half dozen transgendered women seeking non-surgical facial feminization. During these transformations, I use the Golden Ratio as a guideline to help achieve the most natural transformation, but most of these women need surgical intervention. It is truly an honor to be involved in the transition of these brave women whose only goal in life is to live their truth.
