Everyone loses hair. It’s a natural process. On average, people lose between 50 to 100 hairs per day. You might notice it in the drain when when you’re showering or brushing your hair. However, if you’ve taken a closer look at your scalp in the mirror and noticed that your hair is thinner in some areas or your hairline is receding, it’s probably causing you some alarm. So, what can you do?

Hair loss affects 80 million American men and women. That’s right, ladies, hair loss is not specific just to men. Certain medical conditions, hereditary traits, menopause, even stressful life events can all contribute to the condition. When hair loss occurs, you might feel embarrassed, self-conscious and even depressed about it.

Fortunately, there is hope. At Clarity Medical Aesthetics, we can help stimulate hair regrowth naturally with platelet rich plasma (PRP) for hair loss. We understand that there’s a lot of questions surrounding this revolutionary treatment, so we’ve outlined the four most popular questions we’re asked.

1. What is PRP for Hair Loss?

Platelet rich plasma, or PRP, is a unique treatment that has been used in the medical field for the last several years to speed up the recovery process following surgery. It was eventually discovered that PRP actually promotes hair growth by awakening sluggish and/or clogged follicales. Now, PRP is being used to treat hair loss.

What makes PRP so unique is that it uses your own blood to safely promote new hair growth. Your blood contains platelets, which are responsible for healing and regeneration. When the platelets, which are contained in the plasma of your blood, are concentrated and then massaged (when treated in combination with micro-needling) or injected into your scalp at the sites of hair loss, they go to work promoting increased blood flow to the damaged or dormant hair follicle. PRP for hair loss is a drug-free, hormone-free treatment with virtually no side effects.

2. Am I A Good Candidate?

Before undergoing treatment with PRP, it is important to determine if you are a good candidate. PRP is safe and effective for most people, and it can be used to treat men and women alike.

Treatment using PRP may not be very effective if you have an underlying condition such as lupus or a thyroid condition, as these conditions will continue to cause new hair loss even after treatment.

3. What Can I Expect During a Treatment?

Your treatment begins with a topical anesthetic applied to treatment area. Once it takes effect, the area is micro-needled (with a multi-needle handpiece). Micro-needling causes a controlled damage to the scalp, this in turn causes the bodies natural healing response to kick in. Healing growth factors are sent to the damaged site. Next a small amount of blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge. This machine spins at a high speed to separate the platelet rich plasma from the platelet poor plasma. The PRP platelets, is then massaged (or injected) into the scalp at the sites of hair loss. The entire treatment takes less than one hour to complete.

Patients are asked to bring a hat or head scarf to their appointment. After treatment we wrap or cover your hair, you can shampoo and condition hair as you normally would the very next day. It’s best to allow the PRP to remain on your scalp for a minimum of 4-6 hours. PRP for hair loss involves a series of 4 treatments that are spaced out 4 to 6 weeks apart for the best results. We recommend the use of a topical Minoxidil 7%/Tretinoin 0.025% spray daily as part of your hair rejuvenation thearpy. It is also recommended that you have maintenance treatments annually to maximize your results.

4. What Results Are Typical?

You can usually begin to notice the results of treatment within the first 2 to 3 months. Typically, the first thing noticed is a decrease in hair shedding. Next, you may notice that your hair regrows more easily and that it is longer. Better results are usually seen 3 to 6 months following treatment. Following your recommended treatment schedule will help you to maximize your results.
