So many patients come to me for skin rejuvenation—most have researched and read articles, some have talked to friends and some have even had a previous laser procedure. They all come in requesting laser treatments, but do they know the science behind lasers and how they achieve such great results?
I, for one, think everyone could all use a little refresher.
The word LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. This is a form of energy. Some other forms of energy that you’ve probably heard of are radio frequency, ultrasound, light energy, sound energy…you get the point. The energy that lasers use is measured in nanometers (nm). By using clear-cut measurements, we can define the specific laser and determine the targeted end point. In other words, this means we can customize and choose what wavelength we need to use to treat your unique issue.
In aesthetics, lasers are used to treat:
- Age spots (or brown spots)
- Acne
- Dull skin
- Excessive hair
- Fine lines
- Pore size
- Scars
- Sagging skin
- Skin tone and complexion
- Skin texture
- Wrinkles
- Vascular issues (spider veins and cherry angiomas)
Each treatment requires different laser wavelengths to target specific problem areas. The laser intensity and depth and the patients’ skin color are the most important factors to keep in mind for safety and great results.

So even if you’ve already had one laser treatment, don’t assume the same laser can be used across the board. Not all lasers are the same and there are hundreds of lasers on the market that have different results and downtimes. Knowing the type, nanometer wavelength or name brand of the laser system you’ve used in the past will help your provider figure out what exactly you’ve already had done.
When searching for a medical aesthetics provider, make sure they have many forms of energy-based devices available. That way, their recommendations are based on what is best for you, not just what they offer. Here at Clarity, we have a variety of energy based devices, including Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), laser and radio frequency. These are all excellent forms of energy, specifically designed to treat targeted issues like hair, wrinkles, discoloration, veins, cellulite, fat and crepey skin. So the next time you’re ready to address those nagging issues that have been driving you crazy, make sure you (and your provider!) know all of your energy-based options.
